‘Chevening Debate’ at SZABIST

SZABIST and British High Commission jointly organized the‘Chevening Debate’ at SZABIST on February 4, 2013. The event was aimed at apprising the students about the Chevening Scholarships, awarded by the UK government for a one-year Master’s degree in the UK. The event was quite engaging as alumni of this scholarship, Mr. Asad S. Jafar, CEO, Phillips; Mr. Iqbal Detho, National Manager (Child Rights), Society for the Protection of the Rights of Child (SPARC); Mr. Khawaja Tanveer Ahmed, Chief Commissioner; Regional Tax Office II; and Mr. Munir Ahmed Shaikh, AIG Forensic Division, Sindh Police, Karachi; were also invited to share their experience of studying in the UK, and the impact it has had on their lives.

While advising the students, the alumni indicated that it is highly important to choose the right university for career development in the right field of study, as in only that case the students will be able to serve the nation, and become role models for others. They encouraged the students to believe that their ambitions are possible to achieve. Ms. Shehla Qayyum, Deputy Head Chevening Scholarship Program in Pakistan, during her presentation highlighted that till date from a total of 41,000 scholarship awards, 1,200 have been secured by Pakistanis. Prof. Jean heading the Chevening South Asia Journalism Programme educated the students about the two-month intensive course on journalism., “Journalism can be part of the problem or part of the solution”, she said. , Mr. Jonathan Williams, Press Attache & Head of Chevening programme highlighted that, “Chevening is about identifying the great leaders for Pakistan, and also about building a strong relationship between Pakistan and the British.

Towards the end, Dr. Jalbani, Vice President Academics, thanked all scholars and Chevening Programme team for sharing their views and providing the opportunity to SZABIST students to avail this scholarship. Mr. Jonathan presented a token of appreciation to Dr. Jalbani, on behalf of British High Commission Islamabad.
